My interest in yarn started from a game. In the spring of 2016, I stumbled across a playthrough of a computer game called Unravel, created by Martin Sahlin and the Swedish game company Coldwood Interactive. The premise is that you play as a little red yarn figure named Yarny, solving puzzles through environments based in northern Sweden, all the while collecting the memories of an old woman’s past. I became so entranced by this game that I got the urge to create a yarn figure for myself. With this one figure, I had found something I could see myself doing for years to come; my artistic niche.
When Unravel hit its first anniversary, I decided to celebrate by making my own replica of Yarny, using a different wire than I normally do and following Martin's tutorial to get him as accurate as I could. Since then, I wanted to continue the Unravel tradition by taking him out and photographing him in the world. |
